Reconditioning and repair of BMW M57/M57N engines

The BMW M57 engine is a legendary diesel unit known for its great potential and reliability. Unfortunately, after years of use, even this diesel needs a thorough reconditioning.

Reconditioning and repair of BMW M57/M57N engines

As part of the service, we perform the full process from disassembly to start the engine after repair. Each stage is documented and the engine is tested on a diagnostic bench. We also support customers with unit adaptations for off-road projects, modifications to intake and exhaust systems, and custom ECU tuning.

The scope of BMW M57/M57n engine overhaul includes:

1. Engine disassembly and preparation

The remanufacturing process begins with disassembly, measurement and evaluation of the remanufacturability of individual components. Once the parts are classified, a several-stage process of washing and cleaning of the parts begins. We use the methods of hot pressure washing, glazing and sandblasting of selected components. Some of the components after cleaning are sent to the galvanizing process.

2. Machining

The pre-cleaned engine body is subjected to the processes of alignment and machining of cylinder liners by grinding to the dimensions of new pistons. The head is also processed, where valve seats are replaced along with lapping, new valve seals are installed and the surface adjacent to the engine block is machined. The head is also tested for leaks.

Other components of the crank-piston system are measured and reconditioned or replaced as needed. During the treatment of engine components, we inspect the CR high-pressure pump. Each time, all seals are replaced, pumping components are replaced as needed. The remanufactured pump is subjected to efficiency tests and returned to us with a measurement report.

3. New components:

4. Motor installation

The assembly process begins with a thorough cleaning of the engine body and head from the impurities created during machining. The engine block is then painted with heat-resistant paint. The assembly of the components is carried out in accordance with good engineering practice using engine assembly oil and torqued according to the torque values set by the manufacturer.

Engines assembled at our plant are subjected to a lapping procedure with oil filling of the oil bus before the first start-up and two oil changes along with filters.

5. The cost of reconditioning the m57 engine?

The cost of the general overhaul of the customer-supplied engine is 6,750 Euro. The cost of buying the engine after a full rebuild is 7,500 Euro.

The engine overhaul includes the “closed post”, i.e. the engine including the armed block, head, oil pan, valve cover, injectors and CR high pressure pump, pulley. The offer does not include remanufacturing of accessory components such as alternator, starter, A/C compressor, etc. Engines are shipped without engine oil.
